The family that screams together, stays together — at least off screen.
Melissa Barrera may no longer be a part of the Scream franchise, but she remains friendly with her Scream and Scream VI costars Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.
The "Core Four" actors came together with other cast members recently at the Motion Picture & Television Fund's 17th Annual Evening Before Gala, and Barrera posted a photo of the reunion on Instagram.
She explained that she and her costars are "family for life" while speaking with Deadline on Thursday at the Sundance Film Festival, adding, "So if we're ever in the vicinity of each other, we always find each other, and that's what happened at that event. And we just all found each other, and when we find each other we just want to spend the night with each other, and nothing is ever going to change that."
In November, EW confirmed that production company Spyglass Media Group had dropped Barrera from the seventh Scream movie after she posted a series of social media posts expressing support for the Palestinian cause and criticizing Israeli actions since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.
Ortega will not be appearing in Scream VII either due to a scheduling conflict, Deadline revealed soon after Barrera was dropped from the movie. In December, director Christopher Landon announced on social media that he had also left the project.
“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago,” Landon wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone.”
Speaking about her time spent working on her Scream movies at Sundance, where Barrera was promoting her new film Your Monster, the actress said, "I'm just so grateful for what I got to infuse in the franchise, and that's also something that I will be proud of forever."
Brown also spoke about the recent Core Four reunion to Entertainment Tonight, describing it as "so random and fun."
"We did not plan that," she said. "Jenna's my heart and soul. I'll protect her forever. I love her. I love Melissa. I love Jack [Quaid, who appeared in 2022's Scream]. I love Mason. It just made me happy. It was fun to see them. They're family."
Meanwhile, when asked if she would appear in the next installment of Scream if Spyglass called, Brown replied, "So, I think, if you want to ask Spyglass what they're doing, you can. I haven't gotten a call."
