‘Sex and the City’ Shocker: Kim Cattrall to Return as Samantha Jones With ‘And Just Like That…’ Cameo (EXCLUSIVE) - Variety

For one night only, the “Sex and the City” universe will be whole again. Variety has learned that Kim Cattrall will reprise her iconic role as Samantha Jones in the Season 2 finale of “And Just Like That,” Max’s revival of HBO’s “Sex and the City.”

But she will only appear in one scene. According to sources, Cattrall shot her dialogue on March 22 in New York City, without seeing or speaking with the stars of the series, including Sarah Jessica Parker, or with “And Just Like That” showrunner Michael Patrick King.

In the scene, Samantha, who in the show has moved to London, will have a phone conversation with Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. In the first season of “And Just Like That,” Carrie engaged with an estranged Samantha over text, and in the finale, the two made a plan to see each other in order to reconcile.

Famed “Sex and the City” costume designer Patricia Field, who has not been working on “And Just Like That,” dressed Samantha for her scene.

A rep for Cattrall didn’t respond to request for comment. Max did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cattrall’s appearance as Samantha will not be a continuation of the character for now.

Still, the return of Samantha in any form will certainly thrill “Sex and the City” fans, who have been clamoring for even a glimpse of the beloved, empowered publicist who put the “sex” in the groundbreaking series that ran on HBO for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, and led to two movies.

Cattrall publicly announced in 2016 that she was done playing Samantha when she didn’t feel like the script for a proposed third film did justice to the character. “I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film,” Cattrall told Variety in 2022. “That didn’t happen.”

Her decision to step away from Samantha led to a public fallout with Parker. When King and Parker rebooted “Sex and the City” as a new series for what was then HBO Max in 2021, Cattrall wasn’t approached to reprise Samantha, and the new show added other characters — to mixed reviews — in the lives of Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristen Davis) to fill her place.

As they were doing press last year, both Parker and King said that they couldn’t fathom a scenario in which Cattrall would play Samantha again. But as the second season of “And Just Like That” was underway, shooting in New York this past winter, Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, approached Cattrall about putting her stilettos back on as Samantha, which led to her decision to say yes.

Cattrall is currently starring in Lionsgate film “About My Father” with Robert De Niro. She’ll next play a makeup mogul in the Netflix drama “Glamorous,” which premieres on June 22.

The second season of “And Just Like That” also premieres on June 22, but Cattrall’s scene as Samantha won’t air until August.

'That '70s Show' star Danny Masterson found guilty of 2 rape counts, is led from court in handcuffs - The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson was led out in handcuffs from a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday and could get 30 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty on two of three counts of rape at his second trial, in which the Church of Scientology played a central role.

Masterson’s wife, actor and model Bijou Phillips, gasped when the verdict was read and wept as he was taken into custody, while a group of family and friends who sat stone-faced behind him throughout both trials.

The jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after deliberating for seven days spread over two weeks. They could not reach a verdict on the third count, that alleged Masterson raped a longtime girlfriend. They had voted 8-4 in favor of conviction.

Masterson, 47, will be held without bail until he is sentenced. No sentencing date has yet been set, but the judge told Masterson and his lawyers to return to court Aug. 4 for a hearing.

“I am experiencing a complex array of emotions — relief, exhaustion, strength, sadness — knowing that my abuser, Danny Masterson, will face accountability for his criminal behavior,” one of the women, whom Masterson knew as a fellow member of the church and was convicted of raping at his home in 2003, said in a statement.

A second woman, a former girlfriend, whose count left the jury deadlocked, said in the statement: “While I’m encouraged that Danny Masterson will face some criminal punishment, I am devastated that he has dodged criminal accountability for his heinous conduct against me.”

A spokesperson for Masterson declined comment, but his attorneys will almost certainly appeal.

After a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial in December, prosecutors retried Masterson, saying he forcibly raped three women in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003. They told jurors he drugged the women’s drinks so he could rape them. They said he used his prominence in the church — where all three women were also members at the time — to avoid consequences for decades.

“We want to express our gratitude to the three women who came forward and bravely shared their experiences,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement after the verdict Wednesday. “Their courage and strength have been an inspiration to us all.”

Masterson did not testify, and his lawyers called no witnesses. The defense argued that the acts were consensual, and attempted to discredit the women’s stories by highlighting changes and inconsistencies over time, which they said showed signs of coordination between them.

“If you decide that a witness deliberately lied about something in this case,” defense attorney Philip Cohen told jurors, going through their instructions in his closing argument, “You should consider not believing anything that witness says.”

The Church of Scientology played a significant role in the first trial but arguably an even larger one in the second. Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo allowed expert testimony on church policy from a former official in Scientology leadership who has become a prominent opponent.

Tensions ran high in the courtroom between current and former Scientologists, and even leaked into testimony, with the accusers saying on the stand that they felt intimidated by some members in the room.

Actor Leah Remini, a former member who has become the church’s highest-profile critic, sat in on the trial at times, putting her arm around one of the accusers to comfort her during closing arguments.

Remini said on Twitter that the two guilty verdicts in the retrial are “a relief. The women who survived Danny Masterson’s predation are heroes. For years, they and their families have faced vicious attacks and harassment from Scientology and Danny’s well-funded legal team,” she posted. “Nevertheless, they soldiered on, determined to seek justice.”

The alleged harassment, which the church denies engaging in, is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed by two of the accusers.

Founded in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology has many members who work in Hollywood. The judge kept limits on how much prosecutors could talk about the church, and primarily allowed it to explain why the women took so long to go to authorities.

The women testified that when they reported Masterson to church officials, they were told they were not raped, were put through ethics programs themselves, and were warned against going to law enforcement to report a member of such high standing.

“They were raped, they were punished for it, and they were retaliated against,” Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller told jurors in his closing argument. “Scientology told them there’s no justice for them. You have the opportunity to show them there is justice.”

The church vehemently denied having any policy that forbids members from going to secular authorities.

Next week the judge who oversaw the criminal case will hold a hearing to determine how a lawyer who represents the Church of Scientology had evidence that the prosecution had shared with the defense. The evidence involved links that the lawyer accidentally included in an email to Mueller.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they’ve been sexually abused.

Testimony in this case was graphic and emotional.

The two women whose testimony led to Masterson’s conviction said that in 2003, he gave them drinks and that they then became woozy or passed out before he violently raped them. He knew both from social circles in the church.

The third, Masterson’s then-girlfriend of five years whose count left the jury deadlocked, said she awoke to find him raping her, and had to pull his hair to stop him.

The issue of drugging also played a major role in the retrial. At the first, Olmedo only allowed prosecutors and accusers to describe their disorientation, and to imply that they were drugged. The second time, they were allowed to argue it directly, and the prosecution attempted to make it a major factor, to no avail.

“The defendant drugs his victims to gain control,” Deputy District Attorney Ariel Anson said in her closing argument. “He does this to take away his victims’ ability to consent.”

Masterson was not charged with any counts of drugging, and there is no toxicology evidence to back up the assertion. His attorney asked for a mistrial over the issue’s inclusion. The motion was denied, but the issue is likely to be a major factor in any potential appeal.

These charges date to a period when Masterson was at the height of his fame, starring from 1998 until 2006 as Steven Hyde on Fox’s “That ’70s Show” — the show that made stars of Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Topher Grace.

Masterson had reunited with Kutcher on the 2016 Netflix comedy “The Ranch,” but was written off the show when an LAPD investigation was revealed in December 2017.

Halle Bailey Goes Undercover to Sneak Into ‘Little Mermaid’ Showing at Movie Theater: Watch - Billboard

A group of movie-goers seeing The Little Mermaid in theaters recently had no idea that the Little Mermaid herself was in their midst. In a new TikTok, the live action Disney remake’s star Halle Bailey revealed that she basically snuck into a theater to watch the film by wearing a low-key outfit, looking unrecognizable from her character Ariel.

Bailey’s video shows the 23-year-old star disguised in a pair of sunglasses and a face mask as she nabs a bucket of popcorn and makes her way to the screening. Wearing a dark black jacket with her hair returned to brown from Ariel’s famous red shade, fans taking selfies with Little Mermaid posters in the background don’t even notice that the real-life Bailey is walking past them.

“Can’t believe the little mermaid is the #1 movie in the world you guys!!” the singer-actress captioned the TikTok. “Went to the theatre to go see it last night.”

The film definitely made a splash Memorial Day weekend following its global premiere, bringing in an estimated $117.5 million. The opening gives it a similarly successful opening performance as 2019′s Aladdin, but while one of Disney’s top earners overall, The Little Mermaid still falls short of 2017′s Beauty and the Beast, which opened to more than $170 million, and 2019′s The Lion King, which brought in more than $190 million in its first weekend.

Bailey celebrated the film’s Friday (May 26) theatrical premiere with a sentimental tweet on the day of, sharing photos from the shoot and writing: “Can’t believe it today is the day!! the little mermaid is out everywhere in theaters now. This was my first time ever doing a film like this, and words can’t describe how immensely grateful i am to have had this experience with such a beautiful group of people …please go watch and enjoy with your loved ones!! more bts pics soon come.”

Matty Healy dismisses podcast controversy amid Taylor Swift romance - Page Six

Three months after Matty Healy recorded a controversial “Adam Friedland Show” podcast episode, he wants haters to “Shake It Off.”

The 1975 frontman told the New Yorker in an interview published Monday that the February podcast, in which host Adam Friedland made racist remarks about rapper Ice Spice, doesn’t “actually matter.”

“Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy,'” the 1975 frontman explained. “That doesn’t happen.”

Healy, 34, added that anyone who is offended by the episode is “deluded.”

“You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt,” he said. “It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.’

“And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level,” the songwriter continued.

During a February episode of Friedland’s podcast, which has since been removed from Spotify, he and co-host Nick Mullen called Ice Spice an “Inuit Spice Girl” and “chubby Chinese lady” while mocking Chinese and Hawaiian accents.

Healy, who was a guest on the episode, laughed along and did not stand up for the 23-year-old rapper.

He issued a lukewarm apology in April, telling concertgoers, “I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry.”

While the British singer made headlines for his response when the episode first aired, criticism ramped up earlier this month when rumors that he is dating Taylor Swift, who collaborated with Ice Spice on the “Karma” remix, started swirling.

One of the “Anti-Hero” singer’s fans even launched a #SpeakUpNow campaign, requesting Swift denounce Healy’s statements, while other Swifties canceled their orders for the 33-year-old’s “Speak Now” re-release in protest.

Swift has yet to comment on the podcast episode, nor has she confirmed her relationship with Healy.

The 12-time Grammy winner did, however, bring out Ice Spice to perform “Karma” during all three “Eras Tour” shows at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium over the weekend.

Swift and actor Joe Alwyn split in April after six years together.

Timeout—is this Hollywood's newest celeb couple?

The daughter of Beyoncé and JAY-Z, 11, appeared onstage during her mom's Renaissance World Tour stop in Paris, France, on Friday evening, where she performed during the dance breakdown of Beyoncé's “My Power," which is from her 2019 The Lion King companion album, The Gift, as well as her performance of her 2020 single, "Black Parade."

Dressed in a shimmering silver jumpsuit just like her mother, Blue Ivy — who is the second-youngest Grammy Award winner ever — executed the choreography to both songs flawlessly alongside Beyoncé’s backup dancers.

“Give it up for Blue,” Beyoncé, 41, told the crowd, who immediately broke into applause for her daughter after her performance.

Back in January, Blue Ivy joined her mom for a duet of their song "Brown Skin Girl" when Beyoncé performed an hour-long set at the new Atlantis The Royal Resort in Dubai.

Dressed in a red, sparkling ensemble, Blue Ivy sang her portion of the Grammy Award-winning song, while her mom, wearing a yellow corseted dress that was topped with a feathered skirt and matching backpiece, sang her own parts.

At the end of the track, Variety reported that Blue Ivy hugged her mom and walked up the stage's steps, where she then struck a pose and blew kisses to the crowd before her.

Blue Ivy received a writing credit for the tune, which also scored not only her first official feature, but her first official entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes's Full Relationship Timeline - Harper's BAZAAR

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are back on, so what better time to reflect on their passionate romance?

The pair’s relationship was at first professional, as they collaborated musically in 2014; but from there, their connection quickly grew into something more. In 2019, their relationship was confirmed, and after going strong for two years, they split in November 2021. Following the breakup, the two remained close, and earlier this year rekindled their romance. On April 14, they made headlines with a buzzy reunion at Coachella Music Festival, and since then, seem to have picked up right where they left off.

Ahead, see the full progression of Mendes and Cabello’s love story—from their first meeting on tour to their most recent PDA-filled outings.

May 24, 2023: They hold hands in NYC.

The pair step out for a date in New York City, where they are photographed hand-in-hand on a sweet stroll to a coffee shop.

April 14, 2023: They enjoy a steamy reunion at Coachella.

The exes make headlines when they reunite at the 2023 Coachella Music and Arts Festival; there, they are captured on video sharing a passionate kiss and embracing while enjoying a performance.

The appearance also fuels fans’ theories that Cabello’s as-yet-unreleased song “June Gloom” is about Mendes. “Are you coming to Coachella? / If you don’t, it’s whatever / If you do, honey, it’ll be all I think about,” she sang in a since-deleted Instagram post from April that teased part of the track.

March 2022: Camila talks about the split.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Cabello expands on the reasoning behind her breakup with Mendes. “My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life,” she says. “I feel like that was that way for both of us. Because we both started so young too, we’re really learning how to be healthy adults. And that sometimes means not having your no. 1 focus be your career. And that’s okay.”

November 17, 2021: They announce their split.

In a joint statement shared to Cabello’s Instagram Story, the pair reveal that they have officially called it quits.

“Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they say in the statement. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

Soon after, a source reveals to E! News that Mendes allegedly initiated the breakup conversation, but that while Cabello was “very upset over the split,” the separation was still amicable.

November 28, 2020: Camila gushes over Shawn online.

Cabello dedicates a lengthy love note to Mendes on Instagram. “I've learned a lot about love with this guy,” she writes in the caption. “It’s not just the happy blissful moments you see in pictures and videos. When you’re in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you.”

November 24, 2019: They celebrate each other at the AMAs.

Cabello and Mendes give a steamy performance of their single “Señorita” at the American Music Awards, where they take home the award for Collaboration of the Year.

Later that evening, the pair share separate Instagram posts featuring heartfelt notes expressing their love and gratitude for each other.

“@amas thank you everyone thank you so much!❤️,” Mendes writes on Instagram. “Also @camila_cabello i admire you so much you unbelievable human being thank you for being you❤️❤️ we love u guys.”

“I love u @shawnmendes thank u for being so there for me yesterday and every other day, u have the most caring and beautiful heart in the world,” Cabello writes in her own post. “Thanks to all our fans for voting , we love and appreciate you guys so much and are so thankful for you❤️.”

October 20, 2020: Shawn says Camila is his muse.

In the trailer for his Netflix documentary, Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, Mendes reveals that all of his songs have been inspired by Cabello. “My song comes on the radio or something, and I’m like, ‘Everything’s about you. They’re all—they have always been about you,’” he says in a clip. “She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ Like, ‘They’re all about you. Like every song I’ve ever wrote.’”

In the full documentary, released on November 23, 2020, Mendes adds that his music still does not encompass the extent of his emotions for Cabello. “I don’t think I’ll be able to write songs that really do it justice, that can really capture the things and the feelings with her,” he says. “It’s like, when you see a moon or stars, and you try to take a photo of it with your iPhone, and then you just can’t, it just doesn’t look good. And you’re like, ‘It’s not supposed to be captured.’ You know? It’s just supposed to be for us.”

August 9, 2019: They go Instagram-official on Shawn’s birthday.

For the first time since her confirmed romance with the singer, Cabello features Mendes on her Instagram in a heartfelt post marking his 21st birthday. “Happy birthday to this magic human,” she writes in the caption. “I love you!!!!”

Earlier in the evening, she and Mendes are also photographed at the singer’s birthday bash at 1 Hotel in Brooklyn.

July 4, 2019: They leave the friend zone.

The pair’s romance is made unmistakable to the public on Fourth of July weekend, during which the two are seen holding hands for the first time in West Hollywood and later while out partying together at Nobu in Malibu.

The following week, on July 13, the two are photographed locking lips at a café in San Francisco, where Cabello joins Mendes on a leg of his tour. And by the end of the month, the two make headlines when they are photographed sharing a passionate kiss in the ocean while on a trip to Miami.

In a July 12 conversation with Clash magazine, Cabello expresses her gratitude for the special connection she shares with Mendes. “I feel like it’s so rare to meet someone in this industry and find a person of that quality,” she says, “and I feel like Shawn is that person for me.”

June 21, 2019: They drop their hit single “Señorita.”

The pair release their second hit single, “Señorita,” which seems to allude to their budding romantic connection. “You say we’re just friends / But friends don’t know the way you taste / ’Cause you know it’s been a long time coming / Don’t you let me fall,” they sing on the track.

Soon, on June 26, Us Weekly confirms that Cabello has split from boyfriend Matthew Hussey, further fueling rumors of a romance with Mendes.

April 5, 2018: Shawn calls Camila his “favorite person.”

Mendes gushes over Cabello during a Beats 1 interview, saying she is his “favorite person in the whole world.”

Cabello later shares a link to the interview on Twitter and gushes about Mendes. “I shouldn’t be crying at this time in the morning but I AM,” she writes. “I love you SO much.”

November 20, 2015: They drop their first track.

The two release their first single recorded together, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The hit track marks Cabello’s first outing as a solo artist after leaving Fifth Harmony and spurs the pair’s first major wave of dating rumors.

Days later, in a joint appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Cabello and Mendes answer fans’ questions on Twitter, including one about the current status of their relationship. “There is no way you haven’t made out,” Corden flat-out tells the pair. “We really haven’t,” Cabello insists. Corden says he still does not believe Mendes “has never leaned in.”

“That is never going to happen,” Mendes assures Corden, though soon after suggests the reason is because he is friend-zoned “every time I try to make a move.”

Years later, in a November 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Cabello admits that the collaboration with Mendes was the first time she felt “really bonded with him as more than a friend.”

“I think he did too, but we were both really young,” she adds, “and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird.”

July 2014: They meet.

Cabello, then still part of girl group Fifth Harmony, and Mendes, an emerging talent from Vine, meet for the first time while on tour with Austin Mahone as opening performers.

In a joint interview with V Magazine years later, in June 2019, Cabello expresses her initial positive impression of Mendes, telling him, “I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar.”

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The man accused of killing Grammy-nominated rapper Takeoff late last year in Houston has been indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge.

Patrick Xavier Clark, 33, was arrested and charged on Dec. 2, 2022, about a month after the Migos rapper was shot and killed in downtown Houston.

The video above is from a previous report when Clark made bond and was released.

Kirsnick Khari Ball, known professionally as Takeoff, was shot to death in the early morning hours of Nov. 1 outside a bowling alley in downtown Houston. Police said he was in a crowd of people and an innocent bystander at 1210 San Jacinto St.

The rapper and his uncle and fellow Migos member, Quavo, were attending a private event hosted by J. Prince Jr., son of Rap-A-Lot founder, J. Prince.

According to a search warrant, there were 34 people standing in a group outside 810 Billiards and Bowling before the shooting. Quavo, whose legal name is Quavious Marshall, was arguing with a man identified as Michael Prince and two young Black men over a game of dice.

Multiple people fired guns during the confrontation that led to Takeoff's death, according to police.

Two others were injured in the shooting and survived.

More than 30 people left the shooting scene without giving Houston police a statement, according to the department.

While Clark maintains his innocence, detectives said he had a gun in one hand and a wine bottle in another when he was caught on camera firing his weapon. Those bullets allegedly struck Takeoff.

Detectives said fingerprints on the wine bottle are what led them to identify Clark as the shooter.

Additionally, detectives believe Clark's gunfire killed the rapper based on the "direction" he was seen firing on surveillance video, according to a search warrant.

Following the shooting, prosecutors said Clark searched for information about the case and also included his own name and age in the searches.

According to court records, Clark purchased plane tickets to Mexico two days before being arrested and applied for and received an expedited passport.

Prosecutors also said officers found a large amount of cash on him at the time of his arrest.

Clark posted his $1 million bond on January 5 and was ordered to house arrest with a GPS ankle monitor.

Taylor Swift, Ice Spice Remixed Karma for Midnights Til Dawn - Vulture

Photo-Illustration: Vulture. Photos: Getty Images

Swifties still have to wait over a month for Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), but Taylor Swift is giving her fans something else to munch on in the meantime. That is, a remix of “Karma” with up-and-coming drill-pop rapper Ice Spice. “I’m a massive fan of this brilliant artist and after getting to know her I can confirm: she is THE ONE to watch,” Swift wrote on social media. Ice Spice confirmed the news with love on Twitter: “sweetest person ever thank u sm 😍💜 i love yuuuu.” The remix is part of a new Midnights (Til Dawn Edition), out May 26 on midnight. And that’s not it — Swift is also releasing a new version of “Snow on the Beach” with a bit more Lana after fans’ jokes about the Midnights track. “You asked for it, we listened,” Swift wrote. The Til Dawn Edition also features “Hits Different,” the Target exclusive track for Midnights, on streaming platforms for the first time. In addition to being available for preorder, the Til Dawn Edition will also be for sale at Swift’s New Jersey shows this weekend as a special physical edition including the “vault” track “You’re Losing Me.”

The Ice Spice remix is Swift’s first hip-hop collaboration since Reputation, when she worked with Future on the song “End Game.” And it could be a bit of karma after Swift’s rumored new boyfriend, the 1975’s Matty Healy, was part of a racist discussion about Ice Spice on a recent podcast appearance. Healy apologized to Ice Spice at a 1975 show in Auckland, New Zealand, last month. “It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued,” he told the crowd. “It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.” Just remember who Taylor’s real boyfriend is.

Rita Wilson says awkward moment on Cannes red carpet with Tom Hanks isn’t what it looks like - CNN

CNN  —

Rita Wilson wants you to know that those awkward photos floating around of what appears to be a tense moment on a Cannes red carpet on Tuesday with husband Tom Hanks aren’t what they seem.

On Wednesday, Wilson posted a message on her Instagram Stories clarifying exactly what went down amid speculation that the moment captured was heated.

“This is called I can’t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?” Wilson wrote. She went on to say, “but that doesn’t sell stories! Nice try. We had a great time.”

She also encouraged her followers to go see director Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” which stars Hanks and was the movie premiere they were attending when the photos were taken.

This isn’t the first time that a celebrity has debunked online rumors related to viral photos or videos that have captured what appears to be a tense moment.

There was, of course, the internet sensation known as “#Spitgate,” the term born online in September 2022 when viral video footage from the Venice Film Festival showed singer Harry Styles making a motion that caused some to believe he had spit on his “Don’t Worry Darling” co-star Chris Pine.

Pine, and the film’s director and co-star Olivia Wilde, each spoke out since the incident to clarify that Styles in fact did not spit on Pine. Even Styles himself joked about the incident during one of his concerts.

Let’s also not forget those Ben Affleck memes spawned from the 2023 Grammy Awards that went viral when the “Air” actor looked miserable as he sat next to his wife Jennifer Lopez.

Affleck publicly addressed the speculation in March by saying he did indeed have a “good time” at the show, and chalked up the quiet conversation they were seen having to a simple “husband-and-wife thing.”

So, we guess the lesson here is that even though it’s said that a picture can speak a thousand words, it probably isn’t saying what you think it is.

HBO Max is just 'Max' now—here are the 4 things to know about the new streaming service - CNBC

Goodbye, HBO. Hello, Max.

The popular streaming service HBO Max was officially reborn as "Max" on Tuesday. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the new name last month, along with plans to blend the existing HBO Max library with content from Discovery+.

As CNBC reported in April, the name change is designed to signal that Max is a family-friendly streaming service with more offerings than just prestige dramas like "Succession" and "The Sopranos."

Dropping HBO from the name is also meant to protect the HBO brand from potential dilution by being associated with not-so-prestige TLC reality shows like "Dr. Pimple Popper" and "My 600-Lb. Life."

"HBO is not TV. HBO is HBO," Warner Bros. Discovery head of streaming JB Perrette said last month. "We will not push it to the breaking point by forcing it to take on the full breadth of this new content."

But there's a lot more to the rebrand than just a shorter name. Here's what you need to know about the switch to Max.

Is the price changing?

At the moment, HBO Max subscribers won't see any price increase. Their rates will remain the same: $9.99 for the ad-supported tier and $15.99 for commercial-free streaming.

What's new is the "Max Ultimate Ad Free" tier, which costs $19.99 per month. This will offer subscribers more films and shows in 4K UHD, as well as the ability to stream on four devices at once and download 100 movies or episodes for offline watching.

How do you upgrade from HBO Max to Max?

For many customers, the process of switching to Max will be as simple as updating their app's software on their streaming device. Others, however, will need an entirely new app.

If you need to download the new Max app, you will be prompted to do so when you open HBO Max. Your login information will remain the same, and you won't need to create a new account.

Max will also remember all your settings, and you'll be able to pick up on the latest episode of "Barry" right where you left off.

What new shows are on Max?

The first thing subscribers will notice when they log onto their rebranded Max app is the expanded content library. In fact, Max has more than double the amount of content as its predecessor thanks to the addition of shows from Discovery-owned networks like TLC, HGTV and Food Network.

This means that in addition to shows like "House of the Dragon," "Watchmen" and "Sex Lives of College Girls," users will also be able to tune in to "Property Brothers," "House Hunters" and "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

The wide gamut of content has led Warner Bros. Discovery to give Max the slogan "The one to watch."

"It's the one to watch because it's the place every member of the household can go to see exactly what they want at any given time," CEO David Zaslav said last month.

You can see a full list of what's coming to Max here.

Max has a revamped streaming experience

When HBO Max first launched, it was infamously glitch-prone. Its reputation as a buggy, difficult to browse app hasn't gotten much better since. Warner Bros. Discovery has pledged that Max will deliver a much smoother streaming experience.

Perrette said in April that the new app will be able to load video 20% to 30% faster. Users will also receive personalized recommendations for movies and shows to watch based on their viewing habits.

The new Max app features simplified navigation, which Warner Bros. Discovery says will make it easier to explore the app and discover new things to watch.

Max has a larger dedicated kids experience than HBO Max did, with more fleshed out parental controls so that parents can make sure their children are only seeing age-appropriate content.
