2023 US Box Office Crossing $9 Billion, Led By Universal; ‘Wonka’ Tops New Year’s Weekend With $31M+ – Sunday Update - Deadline

SUNDAY AM WRITETHRU: Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he’s delivering the motion picture industry a $9 billion-plus year at the domestic box office, a feat many thought was unimaginable with the lack of a mega-tentpole over the holiday, coupled by a Q4 impacted by the double strikes. These numbers were compiled from Comscore data and Deadline calculations.

But it was a diversified crop of family and adult films over the holidays which got us there, including the Warner Bros.’ trifecta of Wonka (which is leading the 4-day New Year’s Box Office with $31.8M), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (4-day $26.3M), and The Color Purple ($17.7M 4-day), as well as adult movies like The Boys in the Boat ($11.6M 4-day) and even YA romantic comedy, Anyone But You ($10.56M 4-day). As we told you a few days ago, 2024 is bound to shed about $1 billion for an $8 billion take due to a lower inventory of wide releases and Q1 sans several tentpoles.

“Hitting $9 billion is more than just about dollars and cents, it’s about the lessons learned in what was arguably one of the most significant and challenging years for the movie business. Moviegoers are the most powerful players in Hollywood and are providing actionable intelligence on a weekly basis to studios and creatives who can learn much from the unexpected success of films that were not even on the radar at the beginning of the year,” explains Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

“As a historic box office year comes to a close amidst the tumultuous backdrop of strikes, streaming and shifting audience tastes, the bottom line is that the theatrical experience remains an essential part of the entertainment ecosystem,” adds the Comscore exec.

Christmas week box office

We’ll have more granular details on the major studios throughout the long weekend. But hands down, without any question, Universal is winning the domestic box office with $1.93 billion by EOD Sunday, +18% from 2022, off such hits as Super Mario Bros ($574.9M, 2nd highest-grossing film of the year), Oppenheimer ($326M), Fast X ($150.1M) and Five Nights at Freddy’s ($137.2M). In a slot that typically belongs to Disney, it’s the first time since 2015 that Universal has led the domestic box office.

Speaking of Disney, when the dust settles by the end of this weekend, they’ll be second with $1.89 billion, including monies from 20th Century Studios and Searchlight (-2% from 2022). Yes, as was over-reported, it was a tough year for Disney with waning ticket sales for Marvel movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($214.5M) and the lowest grossing title in Disney’s MCU, The Marvels, at $84.4M (however, not the lowest for Marvel, let’s not forget Marvel/20th’s Elektra with $24.4M) as well as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at $174.4M charting as the lowest grossing in the franchise of all-time. Quality over quantity is the mantra for the Mouse House moving forward per Disney Boss Bob Iger.

Warner Bros. is third with $1.4 billion (+50% from 2022). The Burbank, CA lot delivered $277M stateside, $700M across its trifecta over the holidays. Exhibition is thankful, and I understand Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav was also a champ about putting three movies in theaters over Christmas and New Year’s. Despite the remainder of the Zack Snyder-born DC universe crashing this year between The Flash (largely due to the tabloid hijinks of star Ezra Miller), Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Aquaman 2, Warner’s count includes, of course, its highest grossing movie ever —Barbie ($636.2M) which reps almost half of their box office 2024.

While Disney has moved some big movies out of 2024 including the Rachel Zegler starring Snow White and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World, look for Warners Bros. to be the kingpin’s in 2024 with Dune: Part Two, Furiosa, Beetlejuice 2 and Joker: Folie a Deux. Everything is cyclical: Don’t count Disney out in the long, long run. Remember the Rich Ross-run reign of the studio with duds like John Carter ($73.3M)?

Uni’s total includes Focus Features, while Warners includes New Line.

Nancy will be getting into global box office standings later on, but Universal has already crossed the $4B mark, making it the fourth time Uni has crossed that mark, the previous years being 2015, 2017, and 2018. Disney crossed $4B global in August after a $4.9B global take in 2022.

Rival studios may have thrown rocks at Illumination/Universal’s animated movie Migration, but the joke is on them: The movie, which has a 72% fresh Rotten Tomatoes critics score, is looking at a 4-day of $22.3M in third place for the weekend. By end of the day Monday, Migration, with a domestic cume of $59.3M, will be 3% behind the running total of Disney bomb Wish ($61.1M); with a final destination for these birds that’s North, not South, at $100M.

New Year’s Weekend 4-day chart (as of Saturday)

1.) Wonka (WB) 4,115 (-98) theaters, Fri $8.7M (+33%) Sat $8.7M Sun $6.55M 3-day $23.95M (+33%), 4-day $31.8M/Total $142.4M/Wk 3
Through 18 days, Wonka is 6% ahead of 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns at same point in time (final domestic $171.9M), but he’s 6% behind 2005’s Warner Bros Johnny Depp starring, Tim Burton directed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (final U.S./Canada $206.4M).

2.) Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (WB) 3,787 (+81) theaters, Fri $6.75M Sat $7.5M Sun $5.25M 3-day $19.5M (-30%), 4-day $26.3M/Total $84.67M/Wk 2
Yes, this isn’t the strongest of DC movies, and you can say that there wasn’t a well-conceived sequel to the highest grossing DC movie ever ($1.1 billion). I understand that Jason Momoa’s suggestions weren’t a hindrance as can happen when a big star bigfoots a project, and I also hear that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick’s additional story made up for any shortfalls in the first James Wan draft. Through 11 days, Aquaman 2 is already ahead of Marvel mess The Marvels ($84.4M) and well beyond DC dud Shazam: Fury of the Gods ($57.6M). Through 11 days, the sequel is pacing 5% behind DC’s other bomb from earlier this year, The Flash, which finaled at $108.1M. A $150M final domestic take is being forecasted by distribution sources.

3.) Migration (Ill/Uni) 3,839 (+78) theaters, Fri $6.7M (+17%) Sat $6.3M Sun $4.1M 3-day $17.2M (+38%), 4-day $22.3M, Total $59.3M/ Wk 2

4.) The Color Purple (WB) 3,203 theaters, Fri $4.1M, Sat $5.2M Sun $3.7M 3-day $13M, 4-day $17.7M/ Total $50M/Wk 1
The eight-day total here is -38% behind 2012’s Les Miserables at same point its run (final domestic $148.8M), but Color Purple is 74% ahead of The Greatest Showman (granted an original musical which slept its way to $174.3M).

5.) Anyone But You (Sony) 3,055 theaters, Fri $3.3M (-3%) Sat $3.7M Sun $2M 3-day $9M (+50%), 4-day $11.5M, Total $27.5M/Wk 2

6.) Boys in the Boat (AMZ MGM) 2,557 theaters, Fri $2.7M Sat $3.09M Sun $2.47M 3-day $8.3M, 4-day $11M, Total $24.6M, Wk 1

7.) The Iron Claw (A24) 2,794 (+20) theaters, Fri $1.74M (-30%) Sat $1.9M Sun $1.4M 3-day $5M (+4%) 4-day $6.9M/Total $18.2M/Wk 2

8.) Ferrari (NEON) 2,386 theaters, Fri $1.38M Sat $1.53M Sun $1.15M 3-day $4.06M 4-day $5.2M Total $12.07M/Wk 2
We kept comping this Michael Mann movie to All the Money in the World because that was another holiday adult-skewing movie from an auteur, and boy did the dailies look alike. Ferrari is now -16% behind that Ridley Scott title, which ended domestic at $25.1M. NEON reportedly spent around $17M for the U.S. distribution rights and another $15M-plus to market. I’m informed by finance sources their U.S. portion of this movie will be fine after the downstream market. NEON won’t come out with black eyes on their end of this movie. Their commitment to the movie, much like STX’s, stemmed from wanting to enable a dream project by Mann, and also giving it a theatrical release (Ferrari once destined to skip the big screen for a Showtime/Paramount+ streaming release). As far as the indie producers aka executive producers for this movie, the bond company and insurance company on this $96M-plus film — that’s another story. NEON has run a very supportive awards season campaign with a NY and LA premiere, and they’ll be more events into January.

Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow and Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

9.) Hunger Games – Songbirds & Snakes (LG) 1,660 (-849) theaters Fri $1.1M (-8%) Sat $1.15M Sun $650K 3-day $2.9M (-3%) 4-day $3.7M Total $160.7M/Wk 7
The Lionsgate prequel is currently at a 3.6x multiple off its $44.6M opening. The pic cleared the domestic gross of Harry Potter spinoff sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($159.5M).

10.) Boy and Heron (GKIDS) 940 theaters Fri $864K Sat $945K Sun $695K 3-day $2.5M (-9%) 4-day $3.35M Total $36.8M/Wk 4

11.) Poor Things (Sea) 800 theaters, Fri $808K (-20%) Sat $921K Sun $600K 3-day $2.32M (+10%) 4-day $3M Total $11M/Wk 4

Other studio standings for 2023, and we’ll get into them more during the course of the weekend:

Sony$955M (+13% from 2022) — Forty percent of the Culver City studio’s annual U.S./Canada box office comes from the third highest grossing movie of the year, the animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse ($381.3M), proof that the superhero fatigue doesn’t exist, that original and great movies can breakthrough to fans (A CinemaScore). The rest of the Sony slate was made-up of counterprogramming aimed to get adults back in cinemas post Covid, i.e. Apple’s Napoleon ($60M), The Equalizer 3 ($92.3M), A Man Called Otto ($64.2M) and the Jennifer Lawrence R-rated comedy No Hard Feelings ($50.4M). Those $100M-plus domestic hits projected by the industry for next year include Sony’s Ghostbusters – Frozen Empire, Bad Boys 4, Venom 3 and The Karate Kid.

Paramount$837.4M (-35% from 2022) The Melrose lot is down from last year due to Tom Cruise’s highest grossing movie of his career on the 2022 ledger, Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7M). They owned four $100M-plus grossing titles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($172.1M), Transformers Rise of the Beasts (at $157M and $438.9M, it did what it needed to do to revive the long-in-the-tooth franchise), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($118.6M) and Scream VI ($108.1M). Say what you will about the dating and not lengthy booking of Imax screens on Mission, but where else would you date the movie knowing that Indiana Jones was on the schedule? No one knew Indiana Jones would under-deliver. Mission: Impossible 8 ‘s jump to Memorial Day weekend 2025 from June 2024 due to continued filming gets it a three-week Imax run as the movie was shot in the large format exhibitor’s cameras. For all the slime flung at Paramount Global for being a hobbled entertainment conglom with ancient linear cable, everyone can just shut up and be quiet when it comes to the theatrical studio’s feature lineup in 2024 with six potential $100M-plus grossing movies: Bob Marley: One Love, If, A Quiet Place: Day One, Transformers One, Smile 2 and Gladiator 2.

Lionsgate

Lionsgate – $580.4M (+623% from 2022). The studio on a global basis has its first billion-dollar take in five years with just over $1.05B. The studio continued to extend and expand its most important franchises, releasing three successful new installments this year with John Wick: Chapter 4 ($187.1M U.S., $440M WW), Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes ($322.7M) and Saw X ($111M WW)

Lionsgate also found success on a broad range of films embracing innovative marketing, alternative distribution strategies and business models, including: Plane ($74.6M WW), starring Gerard Butler, and Jesus Revolution ($54.2m), released through the studio’s pact with Kingdom Story Company, and Tim Story’s horror-comedy The Blackening ($18.1M WW), released for the Juneteenth holiday with a sequel already in the works. The studio prides itself on being the largest supplier of films for independent global distribution, with nearly 50 multiplatform and limited titles released in 2023. By company ledgers, 92% of Lionsgate’s multiplatform and limited theatrical release titles have been profitable historically. If these dude action movies didn’t work, they wouldn’t keep releasing them. A recent highlight of their model is John Woo’s Silent Night. The movie was intended for both the theatrical and PVOD markets like previous successful Lionsgate releases Sisu and Retribution, however, the low budget acquisition delivered solid results for the studio due to its efficient business model.

Amazon MGM$270.3M (+164% from 2022) Movies like Creed III from MGM ($156.2M) were certainly headed for a theatrical release, but the streamer showed its return to theatrical releases with such Prime Video pivots as Air ($52.4M) and also posted solid arthouse business with the gothic romance thriller Saltburn from Oscar winner Emerald Fennell ($11.3M) and flyover state flick The Boys in the Boat ($24.6M and counting). Look out for Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evan’s Christmas action pic next year, Red One.

Variance — propelled by AMC’s foray into concert pics Taylor Swift: Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce; the former the highest grossing movie of Q4 to date with $179.6M, and also the highest post Labor Day opening this year at $92.8M – $216.4M

Angel Studios – $207.8M
Amid news of pre-bought tickets, empty theaters in weekend one, and a marketing push among right wing circles, the faith-based distributor turned into an event-size player for Middle America with Sound of Freedom, its based-on-a-true story thriller about former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard, who took rescuing abducted children around the globe into his own hands. The movie at $184.1M stateside repped 89% of Angel Studios’ annual box office. Hopefully its Lenten season Cabrini can provide cushion to what’s expected to be an overall dire Q1 for the industry at the B.O.

A24$137.2M (+15% from 2022). One of the few distributors to own a SAG-AFTRA agreement for its slate during the actors strike, saw highs from Australian horror movie Talk to Me ($48.2M), Pricilla (Sofia Coppola’s second highest grossing movie stateside at $20.8M) and this holiday season’s The Iron Claw ($18M-plus and growing).

Other notes on 2023:

AMC Theatres lead all exhibitors –of course, they are the No. 1 circuit– with $2.1 billion (+23% from 2022). Regal is second with $1.4 billion, +16% vs. 2022. Cinemark is third, also with $1.4 billion, +22% from 2022. The AMC Burbank will be the highest-grossing theatre in the U.S. with around $22M in ticket sales, +25% over last year. AMC Empire is the second-highest grossing location with $19.5M (+37% over 2022).

Los Angeles was the top market for moviegoing, with around $715M+ (8% total market share) per industry stats, with the New York City area second with $590M+ in ticket sales (6.6% total market share). Dallas was an amazing third with $271M+ in ticket sales (3% total market share).

Tom Wilkinson: The Full Monty actor dies at 75 - BBC.com

Getty Images WilkinsonGetty Images

British actor Tom Wilkinson, known for films like The Full Monty, Shakespeare In Love and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has died aged 75.

Wilkinson won a Bafta for 1997's The Full Monty, and reprised the role of Gerald when a Disney+ streaming series revisited the characters 26 years on.

He received six Bafta nominations in total as well as two Oscar nominations, for Michael Clayton and In The Bedroom.

He died suddenly at home with his wife and family, they said in a statement.

Watch: A look back at some of Tom Wilkinson's memorable performances

With more than 130 film and TV credits in total, Wilkinson was as comfortable in period dramas like 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2013's Belle, as he was playing criminal masterminds in movies like Rush Hour opposite Jackie Chan in 1998, or Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla in 2008.

He also earned an Emmy for playing US political figure Benjamin Franklin in 2008 mini-series John Adams and an Emmy nomination as John F Kennedy's father Joe in The Kennedys. He played President Lyndon B Johnson in 2014's Selma, and appeared in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

His death on Saturday was confirmed in a statement shared by his agent on behalf of his family.

Wilkinson was, according to the Encyclopaedia of British Film, "a major character star, with a remarkable gift - one among several - for conveying inner pain".

In a tribute on X, formerly Twitter, British actor Phil Davis called him "powerful and delicate and hugely intelligent - one of the very best", while singer and actor Will Young described him as "British acting royalty".

US film maker Scott Derrickson said Wilkinson was "an amazing talent" and recalled a time when the actor gave him a surprise kiss on the lips on the set of The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Born in Leeds before moving to Canada and then Cornwall in childhood, he found his calling at the age of 18 when he was asked to direct a play.

"For the first time in my life, I started doing something I knew how to do," he said.

"I realised it wasn't necessarily just these southern middle-class types that got to be actors; it could possibly be people like me. And once I knew, I never changed my mind."

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) before following the well-worn path to theatre and television work. In 1986, he got his first major screen role in mini-series First Among Equals, based on Jeffrey Archer's best-selling novel.

Playing alongside him was Diana Hardcastle. The couple married in 1988, and also went on to play husband and wife in The Kennedys in 2011, and in 2014 action film Good People. The couple had two daughters, Alice and Molly.

When he portrayed Pecksniff in Martin Chuzzlewit for the BBC in 1994, Wilkinson said: "I looked at it and I thought, I can't get it any better than that. It came out exactly as I meant it to come out. It won a couple of prizes and I thought, I can act, there's no question."

Three years later, he was cast as a former factory foreman who joins fellow unemployed workmates in staging a strip show in The Full Monty.

"I was simultaneously offered the lead in a TV series and a possible part in a low-budget movie," he told The Guardian.

"I remember phoning a friend and he said, 'Take the TV, take the TV'. But I didn't follow his advice, and the TV turned out to be crap."

The low-budget movie, meanwhile, turned out to be the highest-grossing British film up to that point, and took his career to a new level on both sides of the Atlantic.

Wilkinson received high critical acclaim for Todd Field's 2001 US domestic drama In the Bedroom, in which he played a bereaved father. He was nominated for an Oscar for best actor.

He hoped the film would do two things for him, he later said. "One, [prove] I could play the lead role in a movie. Two, I could play an American lead role. And it did both of those things."

The actor earned his second Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in Tony Gilroy's 2007 legal thriller Michael Clayton, starring George Clooney.

Wilkinson's other credits included Batman Begins, The Patriot, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Gathering Storm, Black Knight, Valkyrie, The Lone Ranger and Denial.

He also provided the voice of the fox in the TV adaptation of children's best-seller The Gruffalo.

His long term agent Lou Coulson has described him in interviews as "one of the best".

Off screen, Wilkinson was known for being down-to-earth and keeping a relatively low profile. He said in an interview: "I like to go to Waitrose and not be recognised."

In the 2005 New Year Honours, Wilkinson was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard Shares Photo With Sister as She Reunites With Family After Prison Release - E! NEWS

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is enjoying family time as a free woman.

The 32-year-old Missouri woman reunited with her loved ones to celebrate her release from prison after serving seven years for her role in the murder of her mom Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, who she had accused of abuse. On Dec. 29, Gypsy shared a photo of herself at her welcome home party with Mia Blanchard, 22—one of two children dad Rod Blanchard's shares with wife Kristy Blanchard.

She captioned her Instagram post, "Sister Love."

In other images circulating on social media, Gypsy is also seen at the party with her father and stepmother. A video shows her popping Champagne with her husbandRyan Scott Anderson, who she married in 2022 while in prison.

The photos shortly followed Gypsy's first "selfie of freedom," which she shared on Instagram earlier in the day. In all her pics, she wears jeans and a blue and white ombre sweatshirt, the same outfit she was photographed in while leaving prison the day prior.

How the Smothers Brothers Embraced the Counterculture, Defeated the Censors and Set the Stage for ‘Saturday Night Live’ - Hollywood Reporter

In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter gave me the opportunity to write an oral history about a passion of mine, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, the groundbreaking variety program anchored by Tommy Smothers, who died Tuesday at age 86, and his brother, Dick. Airing on CBS from 1967-70, the controversial show offered an alternate television universe for a young generation, filled with sharp humor, political satire, rock music and relevance. Not ahead of its time but rather right on it.

I compiled countless interviews with what felt like every surviving performer from the show, including Steve Martin and Rob Reiner. Everyone except the brothers themselves, who had proved rather elusive.

Related Stories

Through back channels, I finally acquired Tommy Smothers’ cellphone number, along with a series of warnings. First, I was told, be persistent because he hardly ever answers his phone. Second, be persistent because he probably won’t return your call. And third, don’t be too persistent because it’ll just piss him off.

I called Tommy first thing on a Monday morning. Listening to the phone ring, I practiced in my head the message I would leave him. I figured I would have two sentences, tops, to win him over. Lost in my own thoughts, I initially missed his whispery, somewhat self-deprecating voice answer, “Hello?”

Caught off guard, I froze momentarily before proceeding to spout out 100 sentences of admiration in maybe 10 seconds flat. Tommy laughed, not about anything I said so much as out of empathy for my frantic state.

We made plans to talk the next day. My timing could not have been worse. California wildfires had ravaged his neighborhood in Sonoma County, forcing Tommy to evacuate. He didn’t know if he still had a home, a fate he anticipated discovering before our scheduled call. Hearing my trepidation, Tommy quipped. “I might not be in that great a mood if my home isn’t there.” The home survived.

Throughout the years, I recorded our conversations about the artist and his art, like how he blazed the path for political satire on television for programs like Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show and countless others. “I always wanted something relevant,” he once said. “I felt everything on TV wasn’t accurately portraying what’s going on out there in the world, and I thought it important to do that.”

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour became the first prominent television show to attract the counterculture. “I was aiming for college graduates and a white-collared educated type of audience,” he told me. “It turned out we were No. 1 with 13-year-old boys and 15-year-old girls. Kids are always a little ahead of the arc.”

With the guidance of the show’s producers, Saul Ilson and Ernest Chambers, the comedy uniquely crossed generations, combining rock and roll with Hollywood’s leading stars. Imagine an episode with Bette Davis and The Who, Tallulah Bankhead and The Temptations or Jonathan Winters and Jefferson Airplane.

No one ever equaled the brothers’ unique rapport, blending folk music and natural conversations with sibling rivalry and comical bickering. “We were always fighting from the time we were little kids over everything.” Tommy recalled. “Whether the window should be opened or closed. We slept in bunk beds and fought about eating crackers in bed.”

I marveled at his ability to find talent. “Mason [Williams] said we have to go down to the Ice House in Pasadena. There’s a guy there. Steve Martin. He’s kind of funny and really weird,” remembered Tommy. “I watched the show and said, yeah let’s bring him in.”

The show’s lasting legacy ultimately became Tommy’s censorship battles with CBS, which cost the brothers their show and almost their career. “When we tried something and were told no, I wanted to know why,” he said. “I never got a good reason not to put substance in the show.”

At times, he’d hide the master tape of an episode from the network, sending it in at the last possible moment before airing so that no one had time to edit it. “I became extra stubborn. I can laugh about it now because all my tears are gone,” he admitted half-jokingly.

He played ping-pong with a censor once on the CBS roof, best two out of three, to see if he could keep a joke in. He won. CBS once tried to slip a spy into the writers room. “We all knew it. So we did things that were so bad, just to keep him busy. We entertained him a lot.” He believed the network eventually started bugging his office.

For everything he lost, Tommy had empathy for the censors. “Some of them were really nice,” he said.
“They were stuck in a place where they’d never been before. It was a ’50s mentality. You couldn’t say ‘pregnant’ or ‘sex education.’ It was difficult for them when it got into social things about the [Vietnam] war, voter registration and race issues. And they didn’t know how to handle it.”

Eventually, the network canceled the show, a term the brothers never found accurate. “Dickie always gets pissed off when people say that,” Tommy said. “We were fired.” They thought they would never work again. They went out on the road to do 200 dates a year in small venues. Vegas shunned them. Friends felt awkward. “If your friend is really ill, there’s a lack of eye contact,” said Tommy. “I felt that they felt for me but didn’t know what to say.” Through it all, he always admired Dickie for standing by him. “My brother was never angry with me,” insists Tommy. “He said, ‘You know what you’re doing?’ I said, ‘I’m sure.'”

I think the most poignant aspect of my interactions with Tommy came courtesy of Dick. About a half-hour after my first call, Dick called (Tommy had apparently passed along my number to him). Dick told me that Tommy had been feeling depressed and a little forgotten. My call had meant something to him. Imagine hearing that from one of your idols.

In Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s farewell speech, he mentioned how old soldiers never die — they just fade away. I agree with that first part, as long as we keep their memories alive. But I also feel special performers don’t fade away, either. We keep their artistry in our hearts. In that sense, today is but another day in Tommy’s life, one for which I remain eternally grateful.

Come and Get a Look at Selena Gomez's Photos of Her Date With Benny Blanco - E! Online - E! NEWS

Can't get enough of Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's romance? Just wait until you see these sweet photos from their date.

The singer, 31, recently shared pictures of her and the record producer, 35, at what appeared to be an art exhibit. In one of the Dec. 27 Instagram Stories posts, Benny can be seen wrapping his arms around Selena as they stand in front of a multi-mirror piece and she snaps a selfie of the pair. Another image featured a solo shot of him gazing at the installation.

This isn't the first time Selena—who worked with Benny on her 2023 hit "Single Soon" as well as on their 2019 song "I Can't Get Enough" with Tainy and J Balvin—has given fans glimpses into their relationship.

Earlier this month, the Rare Beauty mogul posted photos of some of her favorite moments from her recent trip to New York and included a photo of the couple kissing and hanging out with friends. She also wore her heart on her sleeve—or rather on her finger—when she was seen sporting a ring with his initial "B" on it.

Selena Gomez Enjoys Cozy Outing With BF Benny Blanco At Luna Luna Park - Yahoo Entertainment

Stepping into the enchanting world of the newly opened Luna Luna Park, Selena Gomez and her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, recently enjoyed a delightful and cozy outing.

Since confirming their romance, the actress has treated her fans to glimpses of her romantic dates night with the record producer.

Selena Gomez And Benny Blanco Enjoy Cozy Romance Under Magical Lights

The 31-year-old took to her Instagram Story to share charming snapshots of their evening at an art exhibit adorned with kaleidoscope mirrors.

The images captured candid moments of the couple immersed in the artistic surroundings. In one reflection, Gomez giggled as Blanco enveloped her in a warm embrace, showing their love in the kaleidoscopic mirrors.

Amidst the vibrant and contemporary art, she shared a photo of a colorful mural depicting nearly nude women dancing. Letting the pictures tell the tale, she refrained from adding captions.

The last snapshot showcased Blanco admiring his reflection while the songstress admired him from behind, adding a whimsical touch to the moment.

For their romantic night out, the "Only Murders in the Building" star donned an all-black outfit with sleek straight hair and minimal makeup showcasing her natural beauty. At the same time, her beau embraced the artsy atmosphere, wearing a colorful quilted jacket with matching puffer pants and white sneakers.

As the "Who Says" hitmaker shared these delightful moments, the venue of their date, Luna Luna Park, provided a backdrop steeped in historyOriginating in the 1970s, Luna Luna Park in Hamburg, Germany, was conceptualized by André Heller, who convinced notable artists to design an avant-garde amusement park.

With its doors opening in 1987, it became not just a sight to behold but a playground of artistic wonder. The carousel designed by Keith Haring, David Hockney's cylindrical forest pavilion, Salvador Dalí's mirrored funhouse geodesic dome, and Jean-Michel Basquiat's painted Ferris wheel were just a few of the star-studded contributions.

Luna Luna drew 300,000 visitors during its initial run in Hamburg and was set to continue its artistic journey with a planned American premiere in San Diego.

However, disagreements between Heller and others led to years of litigation, leaving Luna Luna tucked away. The park seemed destined to be lost to history until Michael Goldberg, a New York creative director, stumbled upon an article about it.

Driven by a mission to resurrect Luna Luna, Goldberg reached out to Heller, who recounted the park's creation and global aspirations. With the backing of mega-rapper and art enthusiast Drake, 44 shipping containers arrived in Los Angeles in January 2022 for an eagerly awaited unboxing.

The Instagram slideshow commenced with a snapshot of Gomez celebrating her best friend Taylor Swift's 34th birthday, complete with a candle-lit cake. The intriguing detail in the photo hinted at her beau's presence, confirmed as he appeared alongside Gomez in another picture, both donning the same outfits from the celebration.

The carousel showcased sweet moments, featuring the couple in a heartfelt hug at a dinner table with friends before showing more fun scenes in NYC.

The images culminated in the highlight on the final slide — a monochrome shot unveiling the first-ever picture of the lovebirds sharing a tender kiss. In it, she leaned back into his arms, her hand softly running through his curly tresses.

The former Disney child actress's caption of the Instagram update, "New York, my favorite moments w you this week," hinted that the slideshow was a loving dedication to her boyfriend.

As expected, the five-time BMI Songwriter of the Year Award winner showed his support by leaving a comment that hinted at a possible inside joke or pet name between the couple, using a pineapple emoji.

Their intimate moments resonated with fans, and although comments were restricted, enthusiastic fans expressed their approval with messages like "We love to see you live your best life!!" and "So, so happy to see you happy." One particularly touching comment read, "I'm so happy for you. You deserve the world."

Cher Files for Conservatorship of Son Elijah Blue Allman - E! NEWS

Cher is seeking to be the sole conservator of her son Elijah Blue Allman's estate, according to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by E! News.

In the filing, the "Believe" singer claims that he is "substantially unable to manage his financial resources." While the 47-year-old is due to receive assets from his trust before the end of the year, Cher states in the documents that a conservator is "urgently needed...to protect Elijah's property from loss or injury."

The 77-year-old goes on to detail that Elijah —whose father was late musician Gregg Allman—cannot handle his finances due to his alleged substance abuse issues.

"Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues," the filing notes, "[Cher] is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah's life at risk."

Barbra Streisand, 81, is 'too old to care' if you think she dresses provocatively - Page Six

Don’t you dare rain on her parade.

Barbra Streisand opened up to the New York Times about her new memoir, “My Name Is Barbra,” on Monday, sharing why she decided to focus so much on fashion in the book and how it’s freeing at 81 to not care what people think about what she wears.

In the interview, the “Funny Girl” star said she thinks “people should express themselves and wear whatever they feel on any given day. And that has nothing to do with age.”

Streisand — whom Alec Baldwin recently called “the hottest woman ever” — said she was careful not to dress sensually in the early days of her career, explaining, “I was too afraid to be seen that way at that time. Now I’m too old to care.”

In fact, it was Streisand’s idea to pose pantsless — “just legs” — for the cover of W magazine in 2016.

“No one would have looked at me and thought, ‘That girl should be a movie star,’” she wrote in her memoir. FilmMagic

While she might not have been wearing overly racy outfits in the 1960s and ’70s, the “Yentl” actress made a statement in other ways, sharing that she’s never “just went with the style of the day.”

“I had other images in my head. I was inspired by period films, paintings in museums and those fabulous Mucha posters of Sarah Bernhardt that I first saw when I was a teenager,” Streisand said.

When it came to her first performances at NYC piano bars, she came up with her own looks, like “a high-necked, long-sleeved Persian vest from the turn of the century.”

“I didn’t relate to the conventional kind of gown most nightclub singers wore,” she said.

For more Page Six Style …

And although her style has evolved over the years, the “Way We Were” singer has always remained true to herself, even using pieces from her own personal wardrobe in films like “The Prince of Tides.”

At the end of the day, Streisand said the way women dress shouldn’t impact what people think about them.

“Like I wrote in my book, ‘Why can’t women be accomplished and attractive, strong and sensitive, intelligent and sensual?’” she shared.
