Will Smith Was Not Formally Asked to Leave Oscars Following Chris Rock Slap, Sources Claim - Variety

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has claimed that it asked Will Smith to leave Sunday’s Oscars ceremony after he slapped Chris Rock. However, sources close to the situation are refuting that the actor was ever formally urged to leave the show. It appears that in the chaos that surrounded the altercation, the Academy and the show’s producer sent mixed message about whether Smith should be expelled from the event.

In an update about pending disciplinary action against Smith on Wednesday, the organization said that Smith “refused” to leave the Dolby Theater. He went on to win the best actor award for his performance in “King Richard” later that night.

That description of events doesn’t sit well with a few individuals with knowledge of the fraught minutes following the Rock slap. They claim that some Academy members expressed that they wanted Smith removed, but they also say that no formal or explicit ask was ever made. Another person familiar with the Academy said that Smith was asked to leave through an on-site representative. That call was made by Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, who, a source says, asked for Smith to leave the show instead of remaining in the auditorium for the rest of the telecast.

Show producer Will Packer, sources inside the Dolby said, was the key to Smith remaining in his seat. In the roughly 30 minutes following Smith’s attack on Rock, before the award for best actor was presented, Packer walked out into the orchestra and conferred with Smith, according to two witnesses. Packer said that he and the production “officially” wanted Smith to stay for the remainder of the show, according to one of the witnesses. Another source close to Packer denied that the producer urged Smith to remain.

Packer did not respond to requests for comment. Spokespeople for Smith and AMPAS declined to comment.

Several A-listers including Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry and Bradley Cooper were seen having close conversations with Smith in the theater during commercial breaks following the slap. Cooper hugged the upset actor, while Washington and Perry reportedly consoled him. No security personnel approached the actor.

When Smith accepted his award, his speech went on for several uninterrupted minutes, much longer than the time afforded to other winners.

Smith assaulted Rock after the comic made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved bald head, suggesting that she was supposed to appear in “G.I. Jane 2.” Pinkett Smith has said that she suffers from hair loss due to alopecia. Smith apologized to Rock on Monday and said that “a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

The Academy is investigating the incident. On Wednesday, the group said that Smith faces “suspension, expulsion or other sanctions” for his actions. The organization also apologized to Rock.

“Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment,” the group said in a statement. “We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

Rock’s team was not contacted prior to the Academy’s statement being released on Wednesday. Another source says it was the first official apology that was issued to the comic following Sunday’s telecast.

Kevin Smith apologizes for 'petty' Bruce Willis comments after aphasia diagnosis - Page Six

Kevin Smith feels like an “a–hole” for “petty” comments he once made about Bruce Willis, whose family revealed he has aphasia.

“Long before any of the Cop Out stuff, I was a big Bruce Willis fan – so this is really heartbreaking to read,” Smith tweeted Wednesday in response to the news of Willis’ diagnosis, referencing the 2010 action-comedy that he directed and the actor starred in.

“He loved to act and sing and the loss of that has to be devastating for him,” Smith 51, went on, admitting he feels “like an a–hole for my petty complaints” and is “so sorry” to Willis, 67, “and his family.”

In January 2011, Smith described the experience of working with Willis on “Cop Out,” which also starred Tracy Morgan, as “f–king soul-crushing.”

“It was difficult,” he said on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast at the time. “I’ve never been involved in a situation like that where one component is not in the box at all. It was f–king soul-crushing.”

“I mean, a lot of people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, you’re just trying to blame the movie on him,'” the filmmaker continued of the buddy cop flick, which received pitiful reviews. “No, but I had no f–king help from this dude whatsoever.”

While Smith claimed Willis “wouldn’t even sit for a f–king poster shoot,” he praised Morgan, now 53, for making production of the film bearable.

“Were it not for Tracy, I might’ve killed myself or someone else in the making of that movie,” he quipped.

It is unclear how long the “Pulp Fiction” star has been experiencing symptoms of aphasia, but his family revealed Wednesday that he would be stepping away from his decades-long career due to the medical condition.

Aphasia affects a person’s cognitive functions, including their ability to speak, write and understand both verbal and written language. It typically occurs after a stroke or head injury, though Willis’ family did not elaborate on his cause.

They also did not specify when the “Die Hard” star received the diagnosis, but sources exclusively told Page Six he was having “cognitive problems” on movie sets dating back to at least 2020.

Sources also said he was using “earpieces” to have lines fed to him and “body doubles, not just for action [sequences], but for maximizing his screen time.”

“Everybody knew, the cast and crew,” one insider explained, adding that the actor’s family eventually “stepped in” and “moved in to take care of him.”

Foo Fighters Won’t Perform at Grammys Following Taylor Hawkins’ Death - Rolling Stone

Foo Fighters will no longer perform at Sunday’s Grammy Awards following the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins last Friday, Rolling Stone has learned.

The band is nominated for three awards for the night: “Making a Fire” for Best Rock Performance, “Waiting on a War” for Best Rock Song, and Medicine at Midnight for Best Rock Album.

Their canceled Grammy performance comes following the group’s cancellation of all of their upcoming tour stops to focus on grieving Hawkins.

“It is with great sadness that Foo Fighters confirm the cancellation of all upcoming tour dates in light of the staggering loss of our brother Taylor Hawkins,” the band said in a statement earlier this week. “We’re sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won’t be seeing one another as planned. Instead, let’s take this time to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we’ve made together.”

Hawkins died in Bogotá, Colombia as the band was preparing for a show at the Festival Estéro Picnic. An exact cause of death has not been determined yet, but the Attorney General of Colombia said at least 10 substances were found in Hawkins, including antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids.

It’s unclear how the Recording Academy plans to honor Hawkins as part of the broadcast. CBS’s executive vice president of specials, music, and live events Jack Sussman told Variety on Wednesday, “We will honor his memory in some way. We want to figure out what is the right thing to do that is respectful to everyone involved. We’re patient. We’ll be planning right up until the very end.”

Bruce Willis is "stepping away" from his acting career due to aphasia diagnosis, family says - CBS News

Acclaimed actor Bruce Willis is "stepping away" from his career due to a recent diagnosis of aphasia, a language disorder that impacts a person's ability to communicate, his family said Wednesday.

"To Bruce's amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities," his family wrote in a post on his daughter Rumer's Instagram account. "As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him."

"This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support," his family added. "We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him."

The post was signed by Willis' current wife, Emma Heming Willis, as well as former wife, actress Demi Moore, and his children Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn. Demi, Scout and Tallulah all posted the same message on their own Instagram pages.

Willis, 67, is best known for his starring role as New York City cop John McClane in the "Die Hard" films, though his acting career has spanned decades and included "Pulp Fiction," "The Sixth Sense," and the television series "Moonlighting." He has won more than 20 awards, including a Golden Globe for "Moonlighting" and one Primetime Emmy each for "Moonlighting" and his appearance on "Friends," according to his IMDB profile.

He was married to Moore for 13 years before their divorce in 2000, and had three children. He is now married to Heming Willis, with whom he has two children.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, aphasia is a language disorder that results from damage in the area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. The disorder "leaves a person unable to communicate effectively with others," Johns Hopkins said, noting that the severity of the disorder depends on which parts of the brain are impacted.

Johns Hopkins said there are multiple causes for aphasia, including a stroke, head injury, brain tumor, infection or dementia. It is not clear which, if any, of those factors caused Willis to develop the disorder.

It is possible for people with aphasia to recover completely, and speech therapy can help people recover some speech and language functions, Johns Hopkins said — but most will permanently retain some form of aphasia.

Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer weigh in on the Oscars slap - CNN

(CNN)Comedians Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer have opened up about the slap heard around the world.

On Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show, Sykes, one third of the trio who hosted the Oscars on Sunday, said while she didn't witness Will Smith slapping presenter Chris Rock because she was changing outfits, she did see Smith's profane verbal exchange with Rock and the moments after.
"I just felt so awful for my friend, Chris, and it was sickening," she told DeGeneres, according to a preview clip. "I physically felt ill, and I'm still a little traumatized by it."
Sykes also expressed her frustration with Smith being allowed to stay in the theater and accept his award for best actor.
"For them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, 'How gross is this? This is just the wrong message,'" she said. "You assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that's it. For them to let him continue, I thought it was gross. Plus, I wanted to be able to run out after he won and say, 'Unfortunately Will couldn't be here tonight...'"
Smith has apologized for the incident. Rock has not yet made any public comments but is set to return to the stage tonight in Boston with his stand-up tour.
Sykes says she's upset by the fact that "no one" has apologized to her and fellow hosts Amy Schumer and Regina Hall.
"We worked really hard to put that show together," she said, only for it to be overshadowed.
Sykes shared that she and Rock, however, interacted at an after part and he apologized to her, saying, "It was supposed to be your night," according to Sykes.
"That's who Chris is," she said.

Schumer weighs in

Amy Schumer arrives at the Oscars on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Schumer took to Instagram to share her thoughts, stating she was still feeling "triggered and traumatized."
"I love my friend @chrisrock and believe he handled it like a pro," she wrote. "Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend @questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing."
Rock was presenting the award for best documentary feature when Smith rushed the stage and struck him on the face over a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
"I'm still in shock and stunned and sad. Im proud of myself and my cohosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed," Schumer wrote in the post, which she also used to plug her Hulu series "Life and Beth," joking "I think we can all agree that the best way to unpack what happened is to stream my series."

Tom Parker, The Wanted Singer, Dead at 33 from Brain Cancer - Vulture

Tom Parker. Photo: David M. Benett/2016 Dave Benett

Tom Parker, one-fifth of boy band the Wanted, died after previously announcing he had brain cancer in 2020. He was 33. Parker’s wife, Kelsey, announced on Instagram that he died “peacefully earlier today with all of his family by his side.” She revealed the news alongside a photo of him with their two children. “Our hearts are broken, Tom was the centre of our world and we can’t imagine life without his infectious smile and energetic presence,” she wrote. Parker joined the Wanted in 2009 after a massive audition process; he’d previously auditioned for The X-Factor. The group released its debut single, “All Time Low,” in 2010, which hit No. 1 in the U.K. A self-titled album followed later that year, with a follow-up, Battleground, in 2011. A single off that album, “Glad You Came,” also reached No. 1 in the U.K. and became a crossover hit in the U.S., where it peaked at No. 3. The group released a third album, Word of Mouth, in 2013, and went on hiatus after a 2014 tour.

Parker continued to perform while the Wanted was on hiatus, including in a U.K. tour of Grease in 2017. In 2020, he opened up about his brain-cancer diagnosis. The next year, he reunited with the Wanted for a greatest-hits album. The band’s first performance back was at a cancer charity concert organized by Parker. After receiving treatment for his brain tumor, Parker said last November that his condition was “stable.”

Earlier this month, Parker performed on the Wanted’s European reunion tour. The singer announced in March that his memoir, Hope, would be released on July 21. “This is not a book about dying,” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s a book about living.”

Sheriffs visit Will Smith's home after star slaps Chris Rock - Page Six

Los Angeles sheriffs were seen visiting the home of Will Smith Tuesday, two days after the actor slapped Chris Rock on-stage during the 2022 Oscars.

Officers were spotted driving into the gates of the Smiths Calabasas mansion in a marked patrol car at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Splash News reported as they snapped photos of the police vehicle.

Deputy Lizette Salcon, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, told Page Six that police arrived after someone reported a drone flying through the ritzy neighborhood, but did not confirm if the Smiths called in the complaint, or another neighbor close by.

“We just sent that unit over there to try to locate the drone and see if there was a paparazzi or what was going on,” Salcon told us, “but when the deputies got there, they weren’t able to locate the drone. It had already left the area.”

While Rock, 57, has decided not to press charges, many have wondered if the “King Richard” actor, 53, would face legal consequences for physically attacking the comedian over a G.I. Jane joke aimed at Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith — who suffers from hair loss condition alopecia.

“The [Los Angeles] city attorney could bring charges based upon the evidence without necessarily relying upon the victim,” Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles County District Attorney from 2000 to 2012, told The Post Tuesday.

“The victim does not control whether or not a prosecutor should file charges,” Cooley continued, “However, charges actually can and should be filed because the offense was against the state of California. It’s not Chris Rock versus Will Smith in a criminal matter. The LAPD and the city attorney should not close the door on what was an obvious criminal offense and is easily provable.”

Will apologized to Rock via Instagram Monday evening, sharing, “Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Jada was brief in her public reaction to the incident, simply sharing, “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it,” via Instagram.

Rock has yet to respond to the hoopla surrounding the evening, while The Academy has expressed its disappointment in the “Hitch” star and will be moving forward with an investigation.

Academy Members Blast “Disrespectful,” “Clumsily Edited” Presentation of 8 Oscars - Hollywood Reporter

Following Sunday’s 94th Academy Awards, outrage over the Oscars controversy hasn’t subsided.

No, I’m not referring to THAT one, which is also unlikely to die down anytime soon. I’m referring to the one that began more than a month ago, over the Academy’s decision to present eight awards before the live telecast of the Oscars and add edited excerpts from their speeches into the broadcast.

After hearing from the winners backstage on Sunday — as well as nominees, past winners and other Academy members who watched from the affected categories — The Hollywood Reporter was hard pressed to find one that has something positive to say about the way in which this was handled.

Related Stories

I hope you are hiding in shame and regret today,” wrote Oscar winning rerecording mixer Paul Massey in an email that he says he sent to Academy president David Rubin on Monday. “That was truly the WORST Oscar show ever to go on air. Fat, bloated, with no directive to keep it within three hours as we in the eight pre-recorded categories were promised. We were excluded for no reason.”

Massey, who this year received his 10th nomination, for No Time to Die, continued in his assessment of the show: “Full of over-indulgent intros with no regard for the talent that makes up the membership of the Academy … except for those truly above the line. The class system has NEVER been on such display as it was last night.”

The Academy did not comment for this piece.

In the controversy leading up to Sunday’s Oscars, the format change was attributed to a need to shake up the show. The 2021 ceremony was the lowest-rated Oscars telecast ever, with just 10.4 million viewers, which because of COVID-19 was a scaled-down event at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. This year’s show did better. The ABC broadcast drew 16.62 million viewers as it returned to Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, though it was the second-lowest rated show since Nielsen began tracking total viewers in the 1970s. Before 2021, each year’s ratings had topped 20 million.

The preshow message about the format change was that the 2022 Oscars had to control its length, but the telecast ultimately ran 3 hours and 40 minutes.

“The purpose as explained to us was to ensure that the show ran three hours, and that categorically went completely wrong,” said a nominee whose category wasn’t presented live. “My hope is the Academy has a major overhaul.”

Another Academy member, who has been Oscar nominated in previous years, said they were concerned going into the show that the telecast plan “seemed very disrespectful to many of the nominees and winners.”

“It turned out even worse,” said this Academy member, who noted the show ran over its goal time. “And they still couldn’t fit in the whole 45-second acceptance speeches in the eight excluded categories.”

Backstage on Sunday, multiple winners were critical of the format, including Dune film editor Joe Walker, who pointed out the irony that his Oscar acceptance speech was edited — the beginning, the middle and the end. “We understand the pressure on the Academy,” Walker said, adding, “We all stand together in the Academy with equal strength, and I feel strongly that that was a disservice.” Jenny Beavan, who collected an Academy Award for costume design for Cruella during the live show, said, “I think it felt cheating on the people.” And Alberto Mielgo, director of Oscar-winning animated short The Windshield Wiper, added, “I hope this is the last year they do that.”

After the show, it didn’t take long for the chorus of disapproval to spread. On Monday, Frank Oz said in a tweet, “After being a member for 30 years I’m embarrassed to be associated with the Oscars telecast. Not because of ‘The Slap’ but because of the phoniness of the show. All I sense is a desperate attempt to get more viewers by any means possible, not a show about the love of making movies.”

During a press conference held last week, Oscars producer Will Packer asserted, “We want to make sure that everybody has their moment on this show, and is handled with the same reverence and elegance that you’ve come to expect with the Oscars.” And on Monday he tweeted: “I’m so damn proud of this show!!! I’m grateful for all the appreciation, support and critiques. The LOVE has been overwhelming. It was a true honor and pleasure to take on this responsibility. @ShaylaCowan and I wanted an OSCARS that looked and felt different than any before it…”

But sources in the affected branches tell THR the way the eight categories were edited into the live broadcast felt clumsy and rushed.

“Joe Walker’s acceptance speech was truly witty and pointed in its full-length form, but not in the truncated version,” said an Oscar winner from a previous year. “The shortened categories seemed clumsily edited and hastily stuffed into the show. Better than last year — an easy target — and maybe the best in the last 10 years, but still a stinker. The Academy must find a new way to finance itself and get out from under the thumb of ABC/Disney.” (The Academy receives a licensing fee of around $100 million-plus for the show, plus a piece of advertising, sources say.)

“It was cumbersome, not smooth,” added a prior Oscar recipient from another branch. “It used to be a celebration of all aspects of moviemaking … They were abrupt; there was no chance to focus on what the award meant.”

A nominee in an affected branch pointed out that those — like themselves — who were seated for the so-called “golden hour” awards were in place by 4 p.m., an hour before the live broadcast began, and were “exhausted from the length of the show … Everyone was so fed up by the end.”

As first reported in The Hollywood Reporter, prior to Sunday, Oscar-winning sound vet Tom Fleishman resigned his Academy membership over the decision to present the categories before the live broadcast, and four-time sound mixing nominee Peter Kurland said he intends to step down, while two recent Academy Award winners told THR that they were considering similar moves.

“This wasn’t the Academy Awards,” another Academy member told THR on Monday. “If this is going to be the new format, at that point I would have to give thought to if I want to stay in the Academy. A lot of people are thinking the same thing.”

Looking ahead, on Wednesday, a full meeting of the Academy’s board of governors is scheduled, though the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident is expected to be the main topic. Later, another board meeting is expected to include a full postmortem on the Oscars. This summer, the Academy will elect a new president, as Rubin has termed out, and a new CEO to replace the outgoing Dawn Hudson.

Massey concluded in his email to Rubin: “This awards season, your actions along with Dawn Hudson’s and the rest of the so-called ‘leadership’ have caused great damage to what was once heralded as a great institution — one to be held in high regard. Well, no more — I am ashamed to be an Academy member, a nominee in a second-tier category (sound), having to explain your misguided decisions and actions to those outside of the industry. Shame on you — you’re leaving the Academy in shambles.”

The post was only words with no accompanying caption.
"This is a season for healing and I'm here for it," it read.
The "Matrix" star has been at the center of controversy since Rock, while presenting at Sunday's Academy Awards, joked about her closely-cropped hair.
"Jada I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it," Rock said.

Will Smith took offense to the joke as Pinkett Smith suffers from hair loss due to alopecia.
He strode on stage and slapped Rock in the face, before returning to his seat and yelling at Rock to "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!"

Academy “Condemns” Will Smith, Sets Full Board of Governors Meeting After Chris Rock Oscars Incident - Hollywood Reporter

Sunday night’s Will Smith incident at the 2022 Oscars will not be fading away quietly.

A full meeting of the Academy’s Board of Governors has been called for Wednesday evening, where the matter of Smith slapping presenter Chris Rock onstage at the ceremony is expected to be topic number one, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The decision comes just hours after the officers of the Academy’s Board of Governors — including president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson — convened Monday for an emergency phone call about the incident. Shortly thereafter, the Academy issued a statement declaring: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

Related Stories

The first post-Oscars board meeting always features a postmortem of the ceremony and addresses issues which arose during the show but does not usually happen this soon after the ceremony.

Some sanction of Smith is likely to come — perhaps a suspension of his Academy membership, as some members are calling for, but, in all likelihood, not the revocation of his best actor Oscar, as others would like to see. (Even Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski‘s Oscars were never rescinded.)

Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Board of Governors who’s also an Oscar winner and former host, said as much on The View on Monday: “We’re not going to take that Oscar from him. There will be consequences I’m sure, but I don’t think that’s what they’ll do.”

During Sunday night’s live telecast, Smith, in response to a joke aimed at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, slapped Rock while he was onstage in one of the most shocking moments in the history of the awards show.

The comic made a G.I. Jane joke about Pinkett Smith, who has a shaved head (the actress has alopecia).

When Smith returned to his seat, Rock marveled to the audience that “Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me.” Once back in his seat, Smith yelled to Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”

When Rock told Smith, “Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke,” Smith repeated himself.

The expletives were censored for U.S. audiences, but were shared unedited on social media. Shortly after, Smith was named best picture winner for King Richard and while receiving his first-ever Oscar, he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees; he did not, however, mention Rock.

After the show, the Academy tweeted a statement, saying it “does not condone violence of any form.”

Smith and Rock attended separate afterparties — with Smith saying it’s been a “beautiful night” while dancing at the Vanity Fair Oscar party; Rock was spotted at Guy Oseary’s afterparty. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that Rock declined to file a police report.

Producer Will Packer, taking to Twitter on Monday, called the moment “very painful moment for me. On many levels.”

Smith, 53, who made headlines for slapping Chris Rock, 57, during the show, smiled as he donned a black three-piece suit and had his arm around Zampino's shoulders.

Zampino and Smith were married from 1992 until 1995 and are parents to Trey Smith, 29. Following their split, Smith dated Jada Pinkett Smith and the pair wed on New Year's Eve of 1997; the couple are parents to Jaden Smith, 23, and Willow Smith, 21.

Zampino, who runs a beauty business focused on body butter, chronicled her busy day on Instagram. She was in attendance at Elton John's Oscar bash in West Hollywood, California, keeping company with Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars including Garcelle Beauvais, Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Sanela Diana Jenkins and Erika Jayne.

She later shared a video as she joined Smith's children and mother-in-law Adrienne Banfield-Norris to watch Smith crowned Best Actor for his role in the biographical drama, and congratulated him on the victory, which marked his first Oscar win.

'Congratulations @willsmith - you are more than deserving! #family1st #oscars #bestactor,' she captioned the clip.

Zampino on her social media did not address the incident at the Dolby Theatre between Smith and Rock, which occurred after Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith's shaved head. He said, 'Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.'

The joke did not amuse Pinkett Smith, who has been open about being diagnosed with alopecia, which causes hair loss.

After Smith smacked Rock, he shouted at him twice, 'Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!'

Smith apologized to the academy but not to Rock, in an emotional acceptance speech following his win.

Rock did not press charges in connection with the incident, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Smith and Pinkett Smith appeared in good spirits at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, where they were seen dancing, and Smith was seen singing his 1998 single Gettin' Jiggy wit It.

On Monday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said in a statement that they condemned 'the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show' and 'have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.'

(CNN)Troy Kotsur made history at the 2022 Oscars, becoming the first deaf performer to win an Academy Award in the best supporting actor category for his role in "CODA."

His co-star in the film, Marlee Matlin, became the first deaf actor to ever win an Oscar when she won for best actress in 1987 for her performance in the movie "Children of a Lesser God."
Visibly moved by the acknowledgment, Kotsur had tears in his eyes as he took the stage. Many in the audience at the Dobly Theatre rose to their feet and signed silent applause by waving their hands.
Actress Youn Yuh-jung presented Kotsur with his award, holding it for him while he used sign language to accept the Oscar.
"This is amazing to be here on this journey. I can't believe I'm here," Kotsur signed. "I really want to thank all of the wonderful deaf theater stages where I was able to develop my craft as an actor."
He continued, "My dad he was the best signer in our family but he was in a car accident and he became paralyzed from the neck down and was no longer able to sign ... you are my hero."

See Mammoth WVH Honor Taylor Hawkins With ‘My Hero’ Cover - Rolling Stone

Wolfgang Van Halen’s Mammoth WVH paid tribute to Taylor Hawkins with an emotional rendition of Foo Fighters’ “My Hero” during the band’s concert Saturday in Boston.

Introducing the song, a choked-up Van Halen told the crowd that the drummer, who died Friday at the age of 50, “was a hero to me, and a hero to all of us, and a hero to countless people, so we feel this is necessary.”

Mammoth WVH then launched into the Foo Fighters’ 1997 classic, with Van Halen first helping out on drums before taking centerstage for “My Hero.”

Van Halen previously tweeted following news of Hawkins’ death in Bogota, Colombia, “I’ll never forget meeting Taylor on tour in San Diego in 2012. He was such a ridiculously kind man. The dude just emanated cool. Him, my pops and I talked for as long as we could until we had to leave.”

He continued, “An incredible drummer and singer, he was a constant inspiration to me throughout my entire life. This is like a kick in the gut… You’ll be so sorely missed, Taylor.”

Following Hawkins’ death, countless artists have turned to social media to remember the beloved member of the music community, while artists like Elton John and Liam Gallagher have paid tribute to Hawkins onstage.

Oscars 2022 Red Carpet: Live Updates and Photos - The New York Times

KYIV, Ukraine — He has spoken with two movie stars by video call from the bombarded and encircled city of Kyiv.

His aides lobbied the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for an Oscar night show of support. He rereleased his own television show on Netflix in the middle of the war.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, the actor turned wartime leader of Ukraine, has dedicated most of his public appearances to appeals to Western nations for lethal weaponry to fight the Russians: tanks, jets and missiles.

But Mr. Zelensky, who before he became president had starred in romantic comedies and performed stand-up routines, has also pressed for celebrities and artists to speak up for his country, in what aides say is a worthwhile effort to solidify Ukraine’s global soft power advantage over Russia.

“We live in the modern world, and we know that opinion makers and celebrities are important,” said Ekaterine Zguladze, a former deputy minister of interior now involved in the Ukrainian government’s effort to win support from artists, musicians and celebrities. “Not only politicians shape the world.”

Ms. Zguladze added: “Right now, there exists genuine solidarity around the world for Ukraine. And this solidarity is not because of the heartbreaking images of destroyed cities and human tragedy, but because of the values we all share.”

But Ukraine’s appeal to the academy, the organization that awards the Oscars, has encountered drama of its own.

Before the show, organizers said the war would be noted and the human toll honored, but had not committed to a video appearance by Mr. Zelensky, said Brian Keith Etheridge, a sitcom writer based in Los Angeles. He helped coordinate the Ukrainian government’s outreach to the academy, with help from Mila Kunis, an actress of Ukrainian origin, and her husband, Ashton Kutcher.

“The concern that we were told is, they don’t want to overly politicize the show,” Mr. Etheridge said. “If Zelensky just says ‘thank you’ it will remind people, and it could raise millions of dollars. It’s such a giant platform just to have his face show up.”

Sean Penn, who had been filming a documentary in Ukraine when the war broke out, has called for a boycott of the Oscars if Mr. Zelensky is not permitted to appear by video and vowed to smelt his own awards if the academy snubs the Ukrainian leader. The award statues are made of gold-plated bronze.

If the Oscar producers do not allow an appearance for “the leadership in Ukraine, who are taking bullets and bombs for us, along with the Ukrainian children that they are trying to protect, then I think every single one of those people, and every bit of that decision, will have been the most obscene moment in all of Hollywood history,” Mr. Penn told CNN in an interview.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, the producers said they intended to commemorate the war’s toll but did not commit to a video appearance by Mr. Zelensky.

“We’re going to be very thoughtful about how we acknowledge where we are in the world,” Will Packer, a producer of the Oscar ceremony, said Thursday at a news conference.

Of a possible appearance by Mr. Zelensky, he said: “The show is in the process, so that’s not something that we would definitively say one way or another at this point. As I’ve mentioned before, we want to be fun and celebratory, but we certainly are going to do that in a respectful way.”

The comedic actress Wanda Sykes, one of the ceremony’s co-hosts, noted of Mr. Zelensky, “Isn’t he busy right now?”

While Mr. Zelensky’s aides have pressed for support during the show in whatever form it takes, seeking any avenue to win public backing in the West, the value of celebrity support in a shooting war is not universally acknowledged in Ukraine.

“Ultimately, it’s important what is happening on the ground,” Oleksandr Danylyuk, a former secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said. “Everybody is doing what they can. I don’t know if one more speech of Zelensky will make a difference. But it’s good those who initiate it want to do it. Everybody wants to help in any way possible.”

But Mr. Danylyuk said that “in the end, you need results,” like supplies of fighter jets, tanks or missiles for the Ukrainian Army.

Mr. Zelensky has pressed on all fronts to convey to a broad audience, and particularly to countries that are providing weaponry, the moral imperative of supporting Ukraine in the war.

Sarahbeth Maney/The New York Times

“In general, Zelensky is really following the news from Hollywood and looking for opportunities for support,” Serhiy Leshchenko, an adviser to the president’s chief of staff, said in an interview.

The push for backing for Ukraine during the Oscars began a week ago, after Mr. Zelensky spoke on a video call from Kyiv with Mr. Kutcher and Ms. Kunis, to thank the couple for raising $35 million for Ukrainian refugees and humanitarian aid in a GoFundMe campaign, Mr. Leshchenko said.

Ms. Kunis most recently starred in “Breaking News in Yuba County” and has a planned movie release by Netflix, “Luckiest Girl Alive.”

“Ukrainians are proud and brave people who deserve our help in their time of need,” she wrote in the fund-raising appeal. “This unjust attack on Ukraine and humanity at large is devastating and the Ukrainian people need our support.”

After the video call, Mr. Zelensky’s aides sought a last-minute slot at the Oscar ceremony.

Mr. Zelensky has always had a keen sense of image and storytelling in politics. Earlier this month, he said he was aware that his repeated televised appeals for resistance, and continued presence in the beleaguered capital, had turned him into a symbol of bravery in many countries.

The Oscars are also a natural fit for an appeal by his government for humanitarian assistance, as many of his top aides are also movie industry veterans.

The chief of the presidential administration, Andriy Yermak, was a media lawyer and movie producer. The head of the domestic intelligence agency, Ivan Bakanov, had been the director of the Kvartal 95 studio. A chief presidential adviser, Serhiy Shefir, was a screenwriter and producer whose major credits included a hit romantic comedy film, “Eight First Dates,” and a television series, “The In-laws.”

Before becoming president of Ukraine, Mr. Zelensky played a president in his own television series, “Servant of the People,” which was rereleased on Netflix this month. The character, a teacher, is propelled to the presidency after he goes on a tirade against corruption, which is filmed by his students in a video that goes viral.

Maria Varenikova contributed reporting from Kyiv, and Matt Stevens from New York.
